SCULPTURE BY RENOWNED ARTIST TO GRACE DOWNTOWN
Stunning Piece Will Be Focal Point On East Side of Downtown

VIA Metropolitan Transit, in partnership with the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, is pleased to announce the installation this week of a temporary art piece entitled Star Pointer by international artist John Henry. The sculpture site is located on the grounds of the Ellis Alley enclave, which hosts VIAʼs Charles B. Shannon Customer Information Center. The corner vacant area at Chestnut and Center Streets sits across the street from the Ellis Alley Park & Ride lot, and is adjacent to the new Vidorra Condominium project.

The sculpture Star Pointer, a work of monumental scale, is over 70 feet in height (exact dimensions 70'2" h x 17'10" w x 31' d), is made of steel and painted a vivid red. The skyline of San Antonio will be visually transformed with the addition of this high profile public piece.  John Henry and his team of installers will be working throughout the week constructing the sculpture to its designed form.

John Henry is well known for his large-scale public works of art. Henry pieces are currently on exhibit throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as locally at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. While identified by some in the 1970ʼs as part of the Minimalist Movement, the geometric forms that have defined his work for more than forty years have their aesthetic and historical base in Constructivism. Mr. Henry was a founding member of ConStruct, the artist-owned gallery that promoted and organized large-scale sculpture exhibitions throughout the United States. He currently serves as the Curator of the Outdoor Museum of Art at Chattanooga State College in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A reception to commemorate the Star Pointer installation with the visiting artist will be held Friday, March 12th from 10:00am to 11:00am at the sculpture site on the corner of Chestnut and Center Streets. A short dedication ceremony with city leaders will take place promptly at 10:15 a.m. followed by a reception. Free parking is available.
