MOSAIC Afterschool Program

ARTsmart eductor Alex Rubio and MOSAIC studentsMOSAIC (Mosaic Of Student Artists In Community) is a free after-school program for high school youth.  The MOSAIC studio experience exposes students to drawing, painting and other fundamental visual art techniques and it culminates in the creation of mosaic tile art.   MOSAIC also includes discussions of basic portfolio-building and survival techniques for the professional art world that will give the participants a rounded art experience.

Moon MosaicWe exhibit student artwork on a regular basis and actively seek public and private art commissions for our students, and we encourage high school art departments to apply by requesting a presentation by MOSAIC Studio Manager Alex Rubio, during which he will interview individual students, review their portfolio and select and recruit.

San JuanMOSAIC Students are available for public art projects, murals and commissions.  100% of project fees go back into the MOSAIC afterschool program allowing free after-school art education programming.  For more information contact rubio@bluestarart.org

PAST AND CURRENT PROJECTS

San Juan Square Apartments

San Juan ApartmentsMuralist and Mosaic Studio Manager for Blue Star Education Department, Alex Rubio, will lead a crew of youth participants and high school students in traditional mural techniques utilizing hand made ceramic tile. The Mosaic Program, conducted at the Blue Star’s Education Facility, has recruited students from the San Juan Apartments as well as high school students from the area. Students are scheduled to participate in all aspects of visual art techniques including drawing, painting, mural composition and design. Mosaic Program youth receive hands-on training in the installation and production ceramic mosaic tile.  Once installed, the community is invited to celebrate the unveiling of a neighborhood icon, which will inspire many generations of community artists to come.

Bihl Haus/Dream Bench

Dream bench is a multigenerational collaborative project joining MOSAIC students, elders from the Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments and lead artist Dale Jensen.   The mosaic covered bench, sited at Primrose outside of the Bihl Haus Arts, overlooks the Prasanta and Ela Mukherjee Outdoor sculpture (yet another youth/elder collaboration completed in 2007). Please visit Bihl Haus located just inside  the gates of Primrose at 2803 Fredericksburg Road to view the bench and sculpture.
